Robert Rapson

Robert Rapson is a New Zealand ceramicist renowned for his whimsical and detailed sculptures of ships and vehicles. Born in 1951, Rapson began his artistic journey later in life, transitioning from a career in civil service to ceramics, using art-making as a form of therapy during challenging times.

Rapson's practice is characterised by his self-taught approach, creating hand-built ceramic pieces that often depict boats, cars, and other vehicles. His works are noted for their joyful and quirky style, combining precise detailing with a playful aesthetic.

His work has featured in several exhibitions, including Robert Rapson: Against the Tide at The Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt (2021).
