The Divine Theatre of Seyni Awa Camara

The Gallery of Everything
06.10.24 > 17.11.24

Seyni Awa Camara (b 1945, Senegal) is an octogenarian African sculptor, whose mystical healing figures speak of motherhood, magic and the forest spirits.

Born into a family of artisans, Camara was introduced to the use of clay by her mother. Her inclusion in Jean Hubert Martin’s Les Magiciens de la terre (1989) at Centre Pompidou (Paris) brought international acclaim. Subsequent exhibitions included Harald Szeemann’s Plateau dell’Umanità (Plateau of Humankind) at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001).

Camara’s terracotta oeuvre features in numerous museum collections, notably Tate Modern (London), Musée du quai Branly (Paris) and National Museum (Oslo).

During Frieze week, The Gallery of Everything presents a selection of historic and contemporary sculptures by Seyni Awa Camara in her first solo exhibition in the UK.

Join us at 3pm on Saturday 16th November for a film screening of two award-winning documentaries that delve into the artistic lives of Seyni Awa Camara and Johnson Weree.

Donner Naissance (Giving Birth) by Fatou Kandé Senghor profiles the work and legacy of Seyni Awa Camara, providing an intimate look at Camara's daily practice and the themes which inform her work. Selected by Okwui Enwezor for the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, the film has since garnered numerous awards and critical acclaim.

Weree by Tal Amiran is a moving and harrowing portrait of gallery artist Johnson Weree, who fled the Liberian Civil War and today lives as an undocumented migrant seeking asylum in the Netherlands. The multiple award-winning Weree has been selected for over 30 film festivals worldwide, this is its first public screening in the UK.

After the screening, filmmaker Tal Amiran will join gallery founder James Brett for a Q&A. We hope also to have Fatou Kandé Senghor remotely at this time. Space is limited, please RSVP as soon as possible.
