Le Foyer de l’Art Brut
Expo Chicago, Navy Pier, Chicago [Stand 333]
24.04.24 > 27.04.25
At Expo Chicago, The Gallery of Everything recreates Jean Dubuffet’s revolutionary 1947 Le Foyer de l’Art Brut: the groundbreaking Parisian salon which shocked the European art world and introduced them to the concept of art brut (which would in turn give birth to so-called outsider art).
The presentation showcases such legendary figures as Gaston Chaissac (1910 - 1964), Aloïse Corbaz (1886 - 1964) and Adolf Wölfli (1864 - 1930), alongside rare historic works and sculptures by Juva (1887 - 1961), Jan Křížek (1919 - 1985) and Antoine Rabany (Les Barbus Muller).
It was Le Foyer de l’Art Brut which inspired Dubuffet’s 1951 Chicago lecture - Anti-Cultural Positions - opening the eyes of young artists like Jim Nutt (b 1938) and Roger Brown (1941 - 1997) and leading them to the discovery of autodidacts Henry Darger (1892 - 1973) and Joseph Yoakum (1891 - 1972).
Le Foyer de l’Art Brut is accompanied by a presentation of original documents and publications.
Prices range from $5,000 to $350,000, with highlights including an exclusive textured painting by Jean Dubuffet, a portrait of critic and author Michel Tapié, and paintings owned by surrealist André Breton.
